How Therapy Works
Here is how therapy begins. You walk in the door and we get to know each other. You ask me questions and I ask you questions. I explain what confidentiality means regarding therapy and then I ask you, “What is bothering you most today, and how can I help? ” You tell me your story. Although I am a very good listener, I usually take notes because it is important that I hear and remember accurately. Next, I tell you how I think I can help. If we think that therapy will be productive, we set some goals, develop a plan and schedule therapy sessions.
In therapy, we will talk about your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Our major focus will be to develop an authentic and trusting alliance that will result in self-awareness and healing.
The process need not be a long drawn-out one; it typically takes anywhere from a few sessions to several months.
